Why not repackage them for contemporary audiences if more adaptations are to be made? But classic fictional novels have messages that are relevant to everybody regardless of race or time. These period pieces might argue that they’re simply showing what has actually happened. Shows like Hulu’s Harlots or Netflix’s Anne With An E may be adding historically accurate people of color to their cast to reflect the time period, but the characters of color tend to only be portrayed as servants, sex workers, and manual laborers. People of color are extremely underrepresented on screen, and when they are represented, the portrayals tend to fall into negative stereotypes or the same old tropes. The power of representation has lasting effects, especially on young viewers.
